A Family-Friendly Weekend in Surfside

Whether you're looking for a Springtime city break of sightseeing or a relaxed beach vacation, Surfside has it all. And the bonus? Your kids will have fun, too. From its uptown amenities to its beachtown atmosphere, Surfside is the perfect place for a weekend away with the family. Here’s how to have the perfect family-friendly 36 hours in the Town of Surfside.

Friday

3:00 pm Hotel Check-In

The all-suite Residence Inn hotel, just steps from the beach, is perfect for a weekend visit. Featuring spacious layouts with kitchenettes and numerous amenities – including free hot breakfast, a fitness center and rooftop pool – it is the ideal hotel for families staying in Surfside. The best part? A member of the hotel team will grocery shop for you, at no extra cost, so you arrive to a fully stocked in-suite kitchenette and not miss a moment of vacation.

5:00 pm Rooftop Fun

For guests of the Grand Beach Hotel, the family-friendly rooftop pool at the Grand Beach Hotel Surfside WEST offers a unique aquatic experience. The rooftop at the Grand Beach is great for some playtime in the pool - it’s easy to spend hours swimming laps and splashing in the shallow end. Just as day turns to dusk, settle in for a spectacular view of the sunset, some light bites and for the adults, ice cold martinis.

7:00 pm

If you’re still feeling hungry, head to Cafe Ragazzi for down-to-earth Italian food. A Surfside staple for the last 15 years, it has an impressive selection of international wines and authentic dishes – try the popular osso buco, the fresh spinach-and-cheese cannelloni, or the baked salmon with radicchio. The place is family-owned (by renowned Argentinian singer-songwriter Ricardo Montaner) so there are lots of family touches, like homemade bread and the personable service, so you are sure to have a memorable dining experience.

Saturday

9:00 am Visit the Community Center

For little kids who are early risers, the Community Center’s water park is a great way to enjoy some morning sunshine. The Community Center offers several youth programs open to guests (check the program here) and has a water park that provides hours of entertainment with slides, fountains and interactive play zones.

10:00 am Breakfast Cafe Vert

Start the day with breakfast at Cafe Vert. Popular with the locals, this kosher cafe is known for serving a delicious breakfast offering that includes heaping piles of pancakes and a seemingly endless list of sweet and savory crepes – even gluten free & vegan options for family members with dietary restrictions. If you want to enjoy the sun, there’s outdoor seating for the whole family.

11:30 am Beach time

After breakfast, head to the beach for a morning swim and stroll. Surfside is known for its beautiful white sand beach, where you’ll find crystal clear water and lapping waves – perfect for building sandcastles and playing in the surf.

1:30 pm  Lunch at Backyard BBQ  & Brew

This rustic themed spot is known for use of smoke for flavor and is famous for smoked ribs and brisket and Mendel’s beans. Order a platter for the family or the BBQ Sundae, layered with of all the BBQ classics – beans, beef, and coleslaw – for everyone to enjoy.

2:30 pm Walk Downtown

Surfside is home to a walkable downtown district with distinctive world-class boutiques that have something for everyone. Stroll downtown and shop at Koukla Kouture, for the latest in kid’s fashions. The shop has an array of stylish clothing, accessories and gift items for all ages and the shopping experience was designed with kids in mind. Kid-friendly shopping at its best!

5:00 pm Play in the Park

Surfside’s 96th street park is kid-friendly gathering spot for both locals and visitors and even has a vibrant mural by local Miami muralist Douglas Hoekzema, aka Hoxxoh, who is known throughout the city for his playful spirographic art. For those with younger kids (ages 6 and under), head to the Hawthorne Tot lot, which has two large interactive playsets, swing sets, shaded picnic tables and several play zones.

7:00 pm Dinner on the Town

Surfside has an array of great restaurants to pick from – authentic Italian, gourmet burgers, sushi, and so much more. Take the family for a Mediterranean meal at The Greek Place, a relaxed space that dishes up small plates of fresh Greek staples like shish kabobs, grape leaves, gyros and feta salad. If Mediterranean isn’t a top choice, most of Surfside’s spots are kid-friendly, so let the kids choose your culinary adventure.
