Memorial Day in Surfside

By: Adriana May 23, 2019
Memorial Day weekend in Florida involves equal parts family-friendly fun, great food and a ceremonial appreciation of U.S. veterans. From picnics to parties, Surfside knows how to celebrate this three-day weekend in style. Here are five ideas for what to do on Memorial Day weekend in Surfside. And since all of these events are outside, don’t forget the sunscreen!

Have a Beach Picnic

Looking for a relaxed family getaway with an elegant twist? Stay at the Four Seasons at The Surf Club for an experience that the whole family will remember long after vacation is over. Spend the day at the family pool and enjoy a picnic on beach, don’t forget your wicker basket! Delicious bites from Winston’s Café and a sandcastle building competition are just a few fun options the whole family can appreciate.

Watch the Air and Sea Show

Miami Beach Memorial Day is particularly famous for its annual military-themed Air and Sea Show featuring rousing aerial stunts from the U.S. Navy Blue Angels alongside a parachute jump by U.S. Army Golden Knights, a motocross demo and a fabulous fireworks finale. Free to the public, and just a trolley ride away, head down to South Beach to enjoy the family-friendly event that will be happening all weekend long. And a special thanks to the City of Miami, who will be providing free shuttles to and from the air show, so don’t worry about parking this busy weekend!

Kayak Oleta State Park

Memorial Day is often known for fireworks, beach excursions and outdoor adventures. To do the latter, we suggest booking a kayaking experience at Oleta River State Park. Paddle through mangrove trails, experience the blue waters of North Biscayne Bay, and explore Florida’s largest urban park. Kayaking at Oleta River State Park is a fun way to be active and admire Florida’s natural habitat, vegetation and wildlife.

Eat All the BBQ

It’s a Memorial Day staple to fire up the grill and cook some sizzling barbeque, but if you want to let a real professional take over, hand your spatula over to bbq pit-master, Mendel Segal, owner and chef at Surfside’s Backyard BBQ and Brew. Also known as RaBBi-Q, Mendel is known for his one-of-a-kind dry rub, and kosher meat selections that will have you coming back for seconds, maybe even thirds! Order a platter and don’t forget the sides. Come hungry and you’re sure to leave happy.

Salute the Troops

To celebrate the veterans who have served our country, Surfside is hosting a commemorative Memorial Day celebration in honor of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the safety of our country and a salute to service members on active duty. The ceremonial service, held at Veterans Park, will include the presentation of the colors, local scout troops and special guest speakers. Please join the Surfside community to commemorate this day. Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (305) 866-3635
