The History Behind Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is a relatively new aquatic sport, appealing for both fitness and leisure, that was made famous by celebrities seen paddle boarding in exotic locales. To paddle board, participants sit, stand or kneel on a board in the water and use their arms or a paddle to propel them forward. Stand up paddleboarding is often commonly referred to by the acronym “SUP”.
The sport traces its origins to Hawaii in the 1900s where it was closely tied with surfing legends like Duke Kahanamoku and Dave Kalama. Surfers and athletes tied to the surfing world brought paddleboarding to California and began incorporating new elements that helped to quickly establish it as a popular aquatic sport.
In 2005, it began gaining recognition with a wider demographic as it became a frequent activity for California-based celebrities. With the help of paparazzi photographs, paddleboarding became a global phenomenon.
#FunFact: Paddleboarding may be added to the Olympics! The Court of Arbitration for Sport has yet to decide whether paddleboarding will be represented by the International Surfing Association or the International Canoe Federation.
Presented by Surfside’s Tourism Bureau, Paddletopia is free and open to Surfside visitors and residents.
Complimentary paddleboards will be available for use, register for a time slot here , or onsite.
